Big Sur: Day Trip

Beautiful Big Sur!

This gorgeous slice of California's West Coast between Carmel and Cambria is world renowned for it's photogenic coastline. The stunning Big Sur coast is essentially in pristine condition; there's only a few dozen hidden mansions, lodges and restaurants scattered along the way. We're lucky enough to live just a quick 90 minutes drive away!

This past Sunday afternoon graced us with a rare day of sunshine (amid weeks of storms), so we spontaneously decided to head south and enjoy a few hours exploring the northern tip of Big Sur. Although the ocean wasn't as fluorescent blue as usual (because of the murky sky and low-lying fog), instead, Big Sur offered vivid green fields in response to the recent rain.

Winter in Central California

Unfortunately Highway 1, the only thoroughfare into Big Sur, was closed in both directions due to mudslides about 30 miles south. (The entire Big Sur coast is over 100 miles long). Nevertheless, we grabbed a couple of burritos to-go out of Carmel and drove until we found a nice spot to pull off and have an impromptu picnic. A beautiful winter day in California. Granted, I'm looking forward to spring to kick in so we can stay & camp for a few days next time!Photos featuring views from the famous Bixby Bridge, Rocky Point, Little Sur, and pitstops along the way on Highway 1...
